Nursery for camellias and rhododendrons

THE specialist for large camellia and rhododendron plants.

Over 60 years ago, Giovanni Piffaretti founded his specialist nursery for camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas in one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Maggiore. High up on the hill opposite Laveno Mombello, with a view of Monte Rosa, the Borromean Islands and Stresa, over 500 camellia varieties grow and thrive here on 4 hectares – some of them award-winning.

Location, location, location!

No matter how small your garden is, if you make room for a capital camellia, azalea or rhododendron, you can enjoy a visit to the Floricoltura Lago Maggiore nursery with probably the most beautiful view over Lake Maggiore and an incomparable sea of flowers – at any time of year.

The names of the plants alone make you want to visit: “Perla del Lago” (a proprietary variety of the Floricoltura Lago Maggiore nursery), “Misty Moon”, a Californian variety, or “Stalin”, an Italian variety from the 1950s.

As we learn, there are early, late and winter bloomers, so there is always a scent and bloom somewhere in the nursery. My friend (and Italian teacher) Brigitte and I were able to experience what is usually only available to customers in person, live and in color. We learned something about mother plants (they are not sold, but provide “offspring”), about which variety thrives best where and that some varieties date back to the 17th century.

With this view and this ambience, Brigitte and I were dreaming of a café in the greenhouses, but the nice employee who showed us around and patiently showed and explained everything was not so enthusiastic. He had been working in the nursery for 40 years and didn’t want to spend the last few years of his working life as a barista. What a shame!

No job too big!!!

Whether a private garden, park, golf course or public green space: Floricoltura Lago Maggiore has the right magnificent plant for every location. And if things get really tricky, the magnificent plant can be delivered by helicopter.

But Floricoltura Lago Maggiore also takes on complete garden planning, maintenance work and advice on the creation of ponds and water features. A visit to the website is also worthwhile if you don’t own a park: Click here for the website.
